ROSEMARY GINGER HOT TODDY

Rosemary Ginger Hot Toddy I started drinking hot toddies the winter I moved to the New England. It was a year of white outs and snow days. As the result of the nor’easter/blizzard situation, I saw more snow in the span of a few hours than I had in 24 years of winters combined. Truth be told, I loved it, and I still do. I’m one of those people who bask in the cold air and the knee-high snow. This southerner was blissfully happy in the New England winter wonderland.

I’ve really missed the snow these past three winters in England.

Last week, we got a little dusting of fluffy flakes in Manchester. The snowfall wasn’t enough to sled or build a snowman. Frankly, it wasn’t even enough to leave footprints on the sidewalks. But it was snow, nonetheless. I sat in front of the fire while I watched it frost our little village, hot drink in hand. And this brings me back to the toddy…

The toddy is the perfect winter warmer. It has been my go-to winter drink ever since that first year in Boston. I adore bourbon so it’s always been my booze of choice for this warming cocktail. I know some people use Scotch, brandy, or even rum, but I love the vanilla notes of bourbon alongside the bright lemon.

Now I know that the hot toddy is revered as a soothing remedy for a nasty cold and some reserve it solely for that purpose, but I never tire of the trusty toddy. Whether I’m spry or poorly, it’s something I go to on any bitterly cold night when I want a little warming goodness in front of the fire.

Recently I’ve started sprucing up my traditional toddy with a little rosemary and ginger. It is out of this world, and I knew I had to share it. It gives the drink just a little bit of earthy-ness and spice which feel a little bit special.

  • 1 large spring of rosemary more for garnish
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • Sliced lemon for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix together the lemon and honey until completely combined. In a small saucepan, put the water, rosemary, ginger and the lemon honey mixture. Heat over medium low until the mixture begins to simmer. Reduce temperature to low and let the flavors meld for about 5 minutes.
